Gods of Atheism: David Cronenberg (March 15, 1943 – …)

David Cronenberg…Canadian…film maker…non-believer.  Not only is he another Canadian added to the list, but the fifth from Toronto…I sense a pattern.  Something about Toronto, city that creates atheists whether they are  musicians or even preachers

“Do you remember when you found out you wouldn’t live forever? People don’t talk about this, but everybody had to go through it because you’re not born with that knowledge.”

The man is best known for directing films such as The Fly and A History of Violence…his most recent film is Cosmopolis.  He has also been awarded the Order of Canada (call it the Canadian equivalent to knighthood) and is a Fellow in the Royal Society of Canada.

“Everybody’s a mad scientist, and life is their lab. We’re all trying to experiment to find a way to live, to solve problems, to fend off madness and chaos.”

The man is also one of the most openly atheist celebrities out there.  He has stated his own atheism in interviews without trying to sugar coat nor hide it.  Though born to Jewish parents, he claims that both were atheist so. This being the case, unlike many of us, he is a bit calmer about it than those of us that evolved into it after being brought up theist.

“I don’t have a moral plan, I’m a Canadian.”

He describes himself as “not just an atheist, but a total nonbeliever“.
